How Pregnancy and Childhood Shape Your Nervous System for Life

Long before you could speak, walk, or remember anything, your nervous system was already learning. From the moment of conception, every signal from your mother's body, every interaction with your caregivers, every moment of safety or stress was quietly shaping the system that would regulate your emotions, your relationships, and your health for the rest of your life.
Understanding this can be both confronting and deeply liberating. It explains why some people seem to move through life with ease while others struggle with anxiety, hypervigilance, or emotional overwhelm without knowing why. It's rarely a question of weakness or character. It's a question of what your nervous system learned in its earliest, most formative years.
The Womb: Your First Environment
Your nervous system begins forming just three weeks after conception, and by the third trimester your brain is producing around 250,000 neurons per minute. During this period, your developing system is exquisitely sensitive to your mother's internal world.
When a pregnant woman experiences chronic stress, her body releases elevated levels of cortisol. This stress hormone crosses the placenta and reaches the developing baby. Research from the field of fetal programming shows that prolonged exposure to maternal cortisol can shape the baby's HPA axis (the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis), the central system that regulates stress responses for the rest of life.
A landmark study following children whose mothers experienced significant stress during pregnancy (such as the Dutch Hunger Winter or 9/11) found measurable differences in stress reactivity, immune function, and even gene expression decades later. This isn't about blame. Mothers experiencing stress are not "doing something wrong." It's simply how biology works: the developing nervous system calibrates itself to the world it expects to be born into.
The First Three Years: A Window of Extraordinary Plasticity
After birth, your brain continues to develop at a staggering pace. By age three, your brain has reached roughly 80% of its adult size, and you have formed more neural connections than at any other time in your life. This is the period when your nervous system learns its baseline.
And it learns through one primary mechanism: co-regulation. Babies cannot regulate their own nervous systems. They borrow regulation from the adults around them. When a caregiver responds to a baby's cries with calm presence, soothing touch, and a regulated voice, the baby's nervous system literally learns what safety feels like. Heart rates synchronise. Breathing slows. Cortisol drops.
Over thousands of these small moments, the child's brain builds the neural pathways that say: "The world responds to me. My distress matters. I am safe."
When co-regulation is consistent, children develop what psychologist Mary Ainsworth called secure attachment. Their nervous systems learn to flexibly move between activation and rest, between connection and independence. This is the foundation of lifelong emotional resilience.
When Things Go Differently
But what happens when the early environment is not consistently safe or attuned? When a caregiver is overwhelmed, depressed, absent, frightening, or unpredictable? When there is illness, separation, neglect, or actual harm?
The developing nervous system adapts brilliantly, but at a cost. It learns that the world is not reliable, that other humans are not safe to depend on, or that staying alert is the only way to stay alive. These adaptations get wired in at the level of the brainstem and limbic system, long before conscious memory exists.
This can show up later in life as:
- Chronic hypervigilance: always scanning for threat, struggling to relax, easily startled
- Difficulty with emotional regulation: feeling flooded by emotions or shutting down completely
- Attachment difficulties: trouble trusting, fear of abandonment, or avoiding closeness
- Persistent anxiety or depression with no obvious trigger
- Chronic physical symptoms: digestive issues, autoimmune conditions, chronic pain, sleep problems
- A deep sense of "something is wrong with me" that no amount of success or therapy seems to resolve
The ACE Study: Hard Evidence of a Soft Truth
The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) study, conducted by the CDC and Kaiser Permanente, surveyed over 17,000 adults about ten categories of childhood adversity, including abuse, neglect, parental mental illness, divorce, and household substance abuse.
The findings were striking. People with four or more ACEs had dramatically higher rates of:
- Heart disease, stroke, and cancer
- Autoimmune disorders
- Depression, anxiety, and suicide
- Addiction
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Subsequent research has shown that the mechanism behind these outcomes is largely a chronically dysregulated nervous system and elevated systemic inflammation resulting from years of survival-mode activation. In other words, what happened to you as a child literally lives in your body as an adult.
"But My Childhood Wasn't That Bad"
One of the most common things people say when they begin this work is: "But I had a good childhood. My parents loved me. Nothing terrible happened." And that may be entirely true.
Developmental trauma is not only about big, dramatic events. It can also be about what didn't happen: emotional attunement that was missing, a parent who was physically present but emotionally unavailable, never being asked how you felt, being told to "stop crying" instead of being held, or growing up in a house where you had to be "the good one" to keep the peace.
These quieter experiences shape the nervous system just as profoundly. And they often go unrecognised precisely because nothing "bad" happened that you can point to.
The Most Important Truth: Your Nervous System Can Heal
Here is where everything changes. Your nervous system was shaped by experience, which means it can also be reshaped by experience. This is the gift of neuroplasticity.
Healing the early imprints in the nervous system doesn't happen through insight alone. You can't think your way out of patterns that were wired in before you had words. Healing happens through new, repeated experiences of safety, connection, and regulation, in the body.
