Burnout: A Gentle Introduction

After reading this you'll know:
- •Burnout is more than tiredness. It's a whole nervous system that's run out
- •A weekend off doesn't fix it, and that's not your fault
- •Real recovery is slow and gentle, and it really does happen
- •Tiny daily moments of safety help more than one big rest
If you're so tired that even rest feels hard, this article is for you. It's written gently, on purpose. Take it in small sips.
What burnout really is
Burnout isn't being a bit tired. It's your whole nervous system saying, "I've been going for too long, with too little, and I can't keep doing this."
It's not laziness. It's a body that pushed through for so long that the "push" button stopped working.
You may notice
- Tiredness that sleep doesn't fix
- Feeling flat, foggy, or far away from yourself
- Small things feeling huge
- Crying easily, or not being able to cry at all
- Snapping over things that didn't bother you before
- Wanting to hide from everyone
Any of these can be signs that your nervous system is asking for real, slow care, not a quick fix.
Why a weekend isn't enough
With burnout, your body has been in "on" mode for so long that two days of rest can't undo it. That's not your fault. It's how the nervous system works.
Real recovery is more about tiny moments of safety, often, than one big break, rarely.
Tiny things that gently help
- Lower the bar: do the bare minimum where you can, without guilt
- Slow exhales: even three slow out-breaths tell your body, "we can rest now"
- Sunlight: a few minutes outside in the morning
- Warm food and water, slowly
- Less screen time, especially before bed
- Soft people, soft places: time with anyone or anything that feels safe
- EFT tapping: a small, body-based way to release stress. My EFT course is live now for just €7 if you'd like to learn it.
🌿 Soft prompts for burnout days
Our Stress Reduction Cards are made of small, simple prompts you can do without thinking too much, even on the heaviest days. They're a kind companion when your own ideas have gone quiet.
💛 When to consider professional support
If the heaviness stays, even after trying small kind things, please think about reaching out for more help. A therapist or doctor who understands burnout can really make a difference. Asking for support isn't failing, it's part of healing.
A kind reminder
You're not broken, and you're not lazy. You're a person whose nervous system has been carrying too much for too long. Healing isn't about pushing harder. It's about letting your body finally feel that it's allowed to slow down.
